One of the most recent emails I received from our readers was about Konjac Fiber.
Hi Joe,
Recently I heard about something called Konjac Fiber being used to help lose weight. Do you know what it is and could you tell me anything about how it would contribute to weight loss? Thanks.

Konjac Fiber is dietary fiber that is water soluble. You can find it at just about any health store or vitamin shop. It is typically found in and sold as glucomannan or amorphophallus konjac. Konjac is primarily grown in Asia mainly in China and Japan. It is actually an extremely powerful form of fiber (maybe a bit too powerful if you know what I mean).
Aside from being used for weight loss the konjac root could be used to treat constipation, high cholesterol, high blood pressure & hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Konjac helps promote weight loss by creating a feeling of fullness, leading to a decrease in appetite and caloric intake. As a soluble fiber, it reduces the metabolic impact of food by delaying gastric emptying and slowing the release of sugar into the bloodstream, reducing the insulin response.
It does have some side effects. Like with other soluble fiber konjac can reduce the absorption of nutrients. You could typically counter act this with a multi vitamin. If you mega dose vitamin and mineral supplements I do not recommend doing so with you konjac supplement. Since it reduces nutrient absorption you could wind up preventing your other supplements from being absorbed and you would be wasting money.
