Konjac Fiber for Weight Loss

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

One of the most recent emails I received from our readers was about Konjac Fiber.

Hi Joe,

Recently I heard about something called Konjac Fiber being used to help lose weight. Do you know what it is and could you tell me anything about how it would contribute to weight loss? Thanks.

Konjac Fiber is dietary fiber that is water soluble. You can find it at just about any health store or vitamin shop. It is typically found in and sold as glucomannan or amorphophallus konjac. Konjac is primarily grown in Asia mainly in China and Japan. It is actually an extremely powerful form of fiber (maybe a bit too powerful if you know what I mean).

Aside from being used for weight loss the konjac root could be used to treat constipation, high cholesterol, high blood pressure & hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Konjac helps promote weight loss by creating a feeling of fullness, leading to a decrease in appetite and caloric intake. As a soluble fiber, it reduces the metabolic impact of food by delaying gastric emptying and slowing the release of sugar into the bloodstream, reducing the insulin response.

It does have some side effects. Like with other soluble fiber konjac can reduce the absorption of nutrients. You could typically counter act this with a multi vitamin. If you mega dose vitamin and mineral supplements I do not recommend doing so with you konjac supplement. Since it reduces nutrient absorption you could wind up preventing your other supplements from being absorbed and you would be wasting money.

How to Lose Weight While You Rest

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

When we think about losing weight we tend think about having to perform some action in an effort to lose that weight.

Whether we exercise or prepare and eat a sensible meal these are things that require an action and it is the need for action that prevents most people from trying to lose weight.

While losing weight while you rest is not something you can do without any type of effort at first it is something that is possible to do thus allowing you to increase the rate to which you are losing weight without greater effort.

Preparing a workout program that helps increase and strengthen your heart rate helps you burn more calories at rest. Increasing your muscle mass also contributes to losing weight while you rest.

In upcoming articles I will discuss specific tactics for contributing to the ability to lose weight while you rest. For now I recommend adding an exercise program to your regime if you don’t already have one.

Are Carbs Bad For My Diet?

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

The title of this post is probably one of the most asked weight loss questions so I thought it would be a good idea to comment on it.

With the popularity of the Atkins Diet carbohydrates have received much negative attention. Thanks to Dr. Atkins and his popular diet many of us have come to believe that carbs should be avoided at all costs if weight loss is to be achieved.

The truth of the matter is that carbs are a crucial component in our daily nutrition. We need carbs to fuel our bodies, our organs, our brains and for energy.

I will discuss carbs in a more detailed form on a later date but for now we should change our perception of carbohydrate intake.

According to the FDA’s daily minimum nutritional requirement we should consume 330 grams of carbohydrates per day to ensure basic body function.

Cardio Exercising for Fat Loss

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

I am sure most of you know what type of exercises are considered cardiovascular exercises. For those of you who do not, let me provide some easy examples.

Cardio exercises are performed to either strengthen your cardiovascular and respiratory system as well as burn calories to help you shed unwanted fat.

To get the most out of your cardio exerices based on your specific goal the secret ingredient is timining.

How long you perform cardio or do not perform cardio will determine the benefit.

In order to burn fat from calories your cardio program should be longer than 20 minutes but shorter than 45 minutes.

Exercising for longer than 45 minutes will no longer contribute to fat loss.

Same holds true for exercise programs that are performed in under 20 minutes.

Some cardio exercises are:

Running or walking on a treadmill
Rowing
Stairclimber
Eliptical

My favorite machine is the eliptical. The eliptical is a bit tough in the beginning however it will provide an excellent work out once you have strengthen yourself to handle the exercise work load.

Diets That Shape Your Body

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Weight loss is not always the goal for those of us seeking weight loss advice. We may want to fit in our favorite jeans. We may want to walk the beach with our heads held high.

When we talk about these things we typically want to look good and weight loss is not the goal. Body sculpting is.

There is no such thing as turning fat into muscle but there is such a thing as building or toning muscle while shedding fat.

The type of diets to sculpt your body should be geared toward high protein and low fat. Low fat intake will contribute to shedding unwanted body fat while high protein intake will help our muscle building efforts.

So if you want to lose fat and build muscle at the same time think about utilizing a high protein low fat diet.
